Nigy Boy's management team was forced to put out a scam alert on Thursday as news surfaced that a promoter in the Turks and Caicos Islands, inadvertently wired thousands of US dollars to who he believed was the artiste's booking team as a deposit on an upcoming show.
The statement from the management team read, in part: "It appears that there are unscrupulous persons pretending to be Nigy Boy management who are illegally collecting monies on behalf of Nigy Boy for shows. Promoters are urged to ensure that any agreements and payments that are made are in fact with bona fide representatives of the artiste and not with scammers who are active before the holiday season."
Nigy Boy's manager, Dr Love, said that at no point did he or the booking agent have any communication with the promoters. He told THE WEEKEND STAR that the scammers had prepared a signed contract that looks perfectly legitimate, and they had changed one letter of a valid email address to fraudulently divert a payment to themselves.
"Right now promoters have to be super alert as this scam does not only relate to Nigy Boy, but several other high-profile artistes are being used in this scam," he said. "The scam involves a Jamaica area code, 658, and music industry professionals must be on high alert, paying very careful attention to every last detail of valid email addresses, as one slight change may not be readily apparent."
"Christmas is approaching and the time is ripe for assorted scams so everyone transacting business must be careful," he added.
