Scorpions face uphill task

The Jamaica Scorpions will have to bat out of their skins if they are to get a positive result against the Guyana Harpy Eagles on today’s fourth and final day of their West Indies Championship sixth-round match at Sabina Park.

Today the home side will resume on 123 for two in their second innings, still needing 296 runs to win with eight wickets in hand. Opener Kirk McKenzie is unbeaten on 39 and captain Brandon King on 13.

The third day saw total domination from the Harpy Eagles who wrapped up the Scorpions’ first innings early for their overnight 153 and the visitors chose not to enforce the follow-on and decided to put some quick runs on the board to add to their 271-run lead.

Captain Tevin Imlach decided to lead from the front as he made a top score of 44 from 77 balls in the Harpy Eagles’ second-innings score of 147 for four declared.

Kevin Sinclair weighed in with 36 not out as seamer Derval Green claimed two wickets for 39 runs.

Set 419 runs to win, the Scorpions got to 34 before they lost their first wicket when Carlos Brown was caught behind off spinner Sinclair for 10.

Debutant opener Javaughn Buchanan and Kirk McKenzie then steadied things with a 46-run second-wicket stand before Buchanan, on 39, went caught off Veerasammy Permaul. The left-handed Buchanan had batted 101 balls and hit six fours.

McKenzie then found another useful partner in captain King and they batted out the remainder of the day in a 67-run third-wicket partnership to take the Scorpions to stumps.
