Government senator Abka Fitz-Henley says the next general election, constitutionally due in just under a year, will be a battle for the soul of Jamaican society.
Fitz-Henley made the comment at a Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, Area Council Two meeting on Sunday as he urged uncommitted voters to take note of what he said is the PNP’s blatant and tacit endorsement of criminality.
Mahiri Stewart reports.
Senator Fitz-Henley told the JLP Area Council Two meeting in Robert Miller’s South East St. Catherine constituency, he is of the view that the next general election has added importance.
The People’s National Party, PNP, faced backlash when it paraded controversial dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel on the stage of its 86th annual conference. The artiste recently had his murder conviction overturned.
The Mark Golding-led party was also met with criticism when it announced the selection of attorney Isat Buchanan, as its candidate for the east Portland constituency. Buchanan was twice convicted for cocaine smuggling. He had one of the charges expunged from his record.
There has also been pushback over comments made by two prominent PNP members, Dennis Meadows and more recently Mayor Donovan Mitchell, which were interpreted in the public domain as endorsements of the deadly lottery scam.
Senator Fitz-Henley appeared to reference at least two of those incidents and slammed the PNP for what he described as its endorsement of criminality.
The government senator argued that the PNP-administration is not suited to govern Jamaica.
