Shadow Mining Minister Pledges to Redevelop Bauxite Mining Communities

Opposition spokesman on transport and mining, Mikael Phillips, says the next People’s National Party, PNP, administration will pay special attention to the redevelopment of communities in which bauxite mines used to operate.

Phillips is member of parliament for North West Manchester.

Speaking at Austin Primary School in South East St Elizabeth on Wednesday evening, Mikael Phillips proposed several protection mechanisms for affected communities.

Among them is a consumer complaints body.

Phillips says land titling will also be a priority.

The North West Manchester MP says proceeds from the bauxite levy ought to be used to develop communities where mining operations exist.

He is also reiterating calls for lands that have already been mined to be reclaimed and put to productive use.
