Jamaica’s national women’s senior football team captain Khadija Shaw has been nominated for the 2024 women’s Ballon d’Or award to the best female footballer in the world.

Shaw was today named in a list of 30 women’s footballers from around the world who will battle for the big prize on October 28 at the Theatre du Chatelet in the heart of Paris.

This the second straight year for Shaw as a Ballon d’Or nominee, and it comes following another stunning season for Manchester City in the Women’s Super League where she copped the two big individual awards the PFA player of the season and the player of the year at the WFA awards.

Shaw took City to the brink of the title with 21 goals in 18 games before injury curtailed her season close to the end.

City lost the title on goals difference in a close race with Chelsea.

Meanwhile For the first time in 21 years the names of Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi will not be in contention for the biggest individual award in world football, the Ballon d’Or.

Messi and Ronaldo have won 13 Ballon d’Or awards between them, they dominated the awards since 2008, with only two other players Luka Modric in 2018 and Karim Benzema in 2022 coming between them during that long period of dominance.

On Wednesday a list of 30 players was released with the nominees for the 2024 award.

Spain and Manchester City midfield star Rodri leads the list that includes other leading contenders Jude Belling, Killian Mbappe and Vinicus Junior of Real Madrid.

Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden from the Premier league are also on the list that will be cut to a handful ahead of the big announcement.
