Soursop leaf tea

The soursop leaf tea is considered a herbal tea. But for some who grew up with a soursop tree in the backyard and drinking soursop tea for the sake of drinking tea, it’s just tea.

To make the tea, you need the leave from the evergreen tree of the soursop plant. While some make the tea with green leaves, the dry leaves are used in Jamaica. Dry leaves make more potent tea, and you need fewer leaves than if you were to use green ones.

Drying the soursop leaves is very simple. Wash the green leaves and spread them out to dry in a cold area away from the sun, preferably in a mash basket so they can air dry. It will take the leaves about a week to dry for tea.

The tea doesn’t have any hint of the soursop fruit flavour. However, soursop leave tea does have a pleasing woody taste. Similar to black tea but with a more pleasant taste.

What you need for this recipe

  • Dry soursop leaf: In Jamaica, we only use the dry soursop leaf to make tea. The dry leaves make more potent tea. Place the green leaves in a cool, dry place away from the sun to dry the soursop leaves. It’s best not to sun dry the leaves to keep more of their nutrients. The leaves will take a week to dry for tea.
  • Water: Room temperature will do.
  • Sweetener: I choose honey as a sweetener since it is healthier than sugar.

How do you make soursop leaf tea?

  1. The leaves: Wash the dry leaves and place them in a small teapot with room-temperature water. Three leaves are enough for this recipe, but use more for a stronger tea. Cover the pot, then pot to boil on medium heat.
  2. Boiling time: Bring the water in the pot to a boil. Once the water starts to boil, let it brew for about 3 to 5 minutes. Brew longer for a stronger tea. Turn the heat off and leave to steep for 10 minutes.
  3. Sweeten: Strain and sweeten with sugar or honey. I prefer to use honey.
