The Scientific Research Council (SRC) Annual Science Fair is slated for September 26 at the Hope Zoo in Kingston.
The event, which is open to the public, is being held under the theme ‘Youth-Centred Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development’.
It promises to be a day of inspiration, learning and celebration of the potential of Jamaica’s youth.
Attendees will witness innovative solutions being developed by students aiming to make a positive impact on the world through science and technology.
Shortlisted participants in the Young Inventors/Innovators Competition will share and demonstrate their creations to a panel of judges, comprising industry experts from the private and public sectors, from which a winner will be selected.
Coordinator for the SRC’s Science and Technology Education Unit, Leigia Hall, says the fair aims to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among young people, to boost national development.
“We want to put the youth at the centre to ensure that they are active in the conversation about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and the application of science, technology and innovation for sustainable development,” she said.
“If Jamaica wants to reach the status of a developed country, we need to prioritise innovation, and the youth are the future. It is with them that we will be able to attain this,” Ms. Hall added.
For his part, SRC Information Service Manager, Elijah Green, noted that the science fair is vital in Jamaica’s quest to achieve its 2030 development goals.
“We are looking forward for the persons out there to just come and participate, and just watch and learn something new for what the ideas and the kids are into or what they are doing to change the world, from science and technology,” he said.
