Sri Lanka beat the West Indies by five wickets in the Pallekele International Stadium on Wednesday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three match One Day International series.
In a game reduced to 44 overs a side due to a two hour rain delay, the West Indies, sent to bat, were in big trouble at 58 for 8.
But a record ninth wickets stand of 119 between Sherfane Rutherford, 80, and Gudakesh Motie, 50, dragged them to a more respectable 189 all out in 36 overs.
Wanindu Hasaranga bagged 4 for 40, Asitha Fernando 3 for 35 and Maheesh Theekshana 3 for 25.
Charith Asalanka then slammed an unbeaten 62 to steer the Sri Lankans home at 190 for 5 in 39 overs. Nishan Madushka and Sadeera Samarwickrama supported with 38 apiece against Alzarri Joseph’s 2 for 30.
It was Sri Lanka’s fifth consecutive ODI series win of 2024 and they will go in search of a clean sweep when the teams meet in the third and final game on Saturday at the same venue.
