SURPRISE OLYMPIC discus champion Rojé Stona has missed out on the World Athletics Field Athlete of the Year nomination.
Stona, who clinched the 2024 Olympic discus title in a meet record of 70 metres, was not mentioned in the nomination list of five male athletes posted by World Athletics yesterday.
The Jamaican thrower’s coach and American athlete Ryan Crouser was however mentioned on the list, having won the Olympic and World Indoor Championships shot put titles this year.
Accompanying Crouser on the list is Swedish pole vault legend Mondo Duplantis, who won the Olympic title this year and also broke his world record again.
Also on the list of nominees are Spain’s Jordan Alejandro Diaz Fortun, the Olympic triple jump champion and world leader, Canadian Ethan Katzberg, the Olympic hammer champion and world leader, and Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece, the Olympic long jump champion and World indoor long jump champion.
The women’s nomination list comprises Americans Valerie Allman and Tara Davis-Woodhall, who are Olympic champions of the discus and long jump competitions, respectively. There are also Australian Olympic pole vault champion Nina Kennedy, and Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine, who is the Olympic high jump champion. Closing out the list was Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium, the Olympic heptathlon champion.
The vote to determine the Field Athlete of the Year is now open on World Athletics social media platforms and will close on October 20.
The nominees for the Track Athlete of the Year awards will be released on October 21, while nominees for the Out-of-Stadium Athlete of the Year awards will be announced on October 28.
