High-school science teachers preparing students to sit the Caribbean Examinations Council assessments are being encouraged to utilise the Scientific Research Council’s (SRC) online resources.

Executive Director of the SRC, Dr. Charah Watson, told JIS News that educators can access a stock of useful content on its channel on the popular social media platform, YouTube.

Among the content available is the SRC’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Virtual Experiment Series.

“The series is done in support of students with school-based assessments and other students who are curious about science. Teachers can use it as a resource,” Dr. Watson said.

She told JIS News that the SRC is keen on populating the platform with useful STEM education content as a way of supporting science programmes in schools.

This is in keeping with the organisation’s mission to promote the interest, awareness and understanding of science and technology among Jamaica’s school population.

“Please use it. There are experiments on the platform that teachers can watch with their students in the classroom, or duplicate,” Dr. Watson said.

The SRC also contributes to the development of science clubs in schools islandwide and offers additional support through its expanding STEM Ambassador programme.

Marketing and Corporate Communications Division Manager, SRC, Carolyn Rose Miller, said the entity is also utilising all its online platforms and other resources to foster a spirit of innovation among Jamaicans, especially in youngsters.

“We are committed to boosting innovation. We cannot grow without innovation or find solutions to our problems,” Mrs. Rose Miller said.

The SRC is an agency of the Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, mandated to foster scientific research development and facilitate the development, application, transfer and or improvement of technology of such research for the country’s benefit.

It also serves as an enabler in the creation of new industries and supports technical processes with stakeholders.
