1. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is one of the most affordable and culturally rich destinations to explore from Jamaica. With Arajet Airlines offering cheap direct flights from Kingston to Santo Domingo, traveling to this vibrant city is both convenient and economical. Arajet, a low-cost airline, has transformed Caribbean travel, making it easier than ever for Jamaicans to discover the beauty and history of our Spanish-speaking neighbour.

Why Visit Santo Domingo?

Santo Domingo is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, filled with a rich history that dates back to the colonial era. The Colonial Zone, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to stunning architecture, ancient forts, and the oldest cathedral in the Americas, the Catedral Primada de América. In addition to its historical appeal, Santo Domingo is also a modern metropolis bustling with shopping districts, delicious street food, vibrant nightlife, and picturesque parks. The city’s Malecon, a seafront boulevard, is an excellent place to walk, relax, and take in the views of the Caribbean Sea. My partner visited Santo Domingo on a work trip last year and had a great time, but the news of discrimination against Haitians and by extension, persons of African descent, is very concerning. That being said, I’m willing to see the Dominican Republic for myself hopefully sooner than later and you should too. Roundtrip flight prices start at $370USD, one of the cheapest flights from Jamaica.

Budget Tips for Santo Domingo

  • Affordable Accommodations: Stay in hostels or budget-friendly hotels in the Colonial Zone, where you can enjoy the history of the city without spending much.
  • Public Transportation: Use the city’s affordable public transport system, such as buses and shared taxis, to get around.
  • Cheap Eats: Enjoy local Dominican cuisine at local diners called comedores for a fraction of what you’d pay at touristy restaurants.

2. Panama City, Panama

Panama City is a vibrant, cosmopolitan destination that offers a mix of modern skyscrapers, historic architecture and natural wonders. With Copa Airlines providing cheap flights from Jamaica to Panama City, this Central American gem is within easy reach. Even better, Copa’s stopover program makes it possible to explore this and another destination for the price of ONE such as Cusco, Machu Picchu or Medellín! Roundtrip flight prices start at $400USD.

Why Visit Panama City?

Panama City is known for its famous Panama Canal, a marvel of engineering that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Visitors can explore the Miraflores Locks to see how ships are lifted through the canal or even take a boat through the locks for a firsthand experience of this world wonder. In the heart of the city, Casco Viejo offers an enchanting old-town experience with its colonial architecture, plazas, churches and vibrant street art. Panama City is also a great destination for shopping, offering everything from high-end boutiques to local markets. As a Jamaican, Panama City made me feel right at home with its spirited nightlife, similar cuisine and reggae/reggaetón music.

Budget Tips for Panama City

  • Affordable Lodging: Look for boutique hotels or Airbnbs in the Casco Viejo neighbourhood for an affordable stay. Check out my 2024 Panama budget & itinerary here!
  • Low-Cost Attractions: Explore the walkable city on foot and visit free entry museums and parks such as Museo de la Mola.
  • Cheap Eats: Enjoy meals at fondas, local food stalls where you can get dishes like arroz con pollo (rice with chicken) and ceviche at a low price.

3. Medellín, Colombia

Medellín, once infamous for its association with Pablo Escobar, has transformed into one of the safest and most exciting cities in Latin America. With affordable flights available via Copa Airlines, Medellín offers an incredible cultural experience for travelers seeking something unique without breaking the bank. Roundtrip tickets start at $580USD.

Why Visit Medellín?

Known as the City of Eternal Spring due to its pleasant year-round climate, Medellín is nestled in a picturesque valley surrounded by mountains. The city boasts an incredible public transportation system, including the famous Metrocable which allows travelers to take in breathtaking views while traveling to its hillside neighborhoods. Medellín is also renowned for its cultural events, such as the Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival), and its vibrant art scene, including the Plaza Botero which features large sculptures by the famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero. The city’s innovation in urban design and public spaces has made it a model of modern urbanism in Latin America.

Budget Tips for Medellín

  • Affordable Accommodations: Stay in budget hostels in El Poblado or Laureles, both of which offer affordable dining and entertainment options. Or, take it up a notch and stay just outside the city in Itagüí like I did for only US$30 per night.

5. Havana, Cuba

Havana, Cuba’s capital, is a time capsule of history, culture, and vibrant local life. With flights to Havana available through Copa Airlines and Arajet Airlines for as low as US$366, this enchanting city is one of the most affordable international destinations for Jamaicans.

Why Visit Havana?

Havana is a city of contrasts where vintage American cars cruise past colonial-era buildings, and the sounds of salsa fill the streets. The city’s Malecón (seaside promenade) is perfect for an evening stroll, offering breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and the city’s skyline. Havana’s historical center, La Habana Vieja, is a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with museums, plazas, and beautifully restored buildings. Don’t miss visiting Plaza de la Revolución and the impressive Capitolio, a symbol of Havana’s political history. The city is also known for its thriving music and arts scene, with live performances of traditional Cuban music at every corner.
