FORMER AMATEUR lightweight boxing champion, Jamaican Trevor Thonson, took another positive step towards his goal of becoming a world champion last Saturday night, when he defeated Argentine boxer Pablo Marcos Villafane on points over eight rounds, at the Casino Buenos Aires, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to become the World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedelatin lightweight champion.

This win lifted Thonson’s record to 13-0 with 10 of those victories coming inside the distance. Thonson, who is now based in Las Vegas, was winning for the fourth time this year.

On January 20, he knocked out Kevin Aguirre in five rounds in Louisville, Kentucky, on February 16, he scored a third-round TKO victory over Mike Fowler in Florida, and then won on points against Andrew Rodgers on June 8, in Lewisburg, Tennessee.

Thonson told The Gleaner after the fight that he was a very happy man and hoped that his steady climb to the top of the lightweight division will continue.

“My opponent was cagey and made me work hard for the victory,” he said. He admitted that, as is customary, he went into the fight with a knockout victory in mind, but his opponent made things difficult.

“He is a good boxer and can also take a punch, and although I never felt in danger, I had to be very careful because he landed some good punches during the fight.”

He said that after a short break, he will be back in the gym, because he would like to have at least one more fight this year. He took time out to heap praise on his handlers and promoter Boswell Promotions, who he said are giving him every opportunity to grow, and develop his skills in a positive way.
