Trelawny Major League takes on bold new format

THE 2025 TRELAWNY Major League has received a commitment for more than $5 million as the combined contribution of a number of sponsors, led by Duncans Complex and Entertainment.

The competition, called the Duncans Complex/Wickeham McNiel Major League, had its launch on Thursday before the competition’s kick-off on Sunday at the Trelawny Stadium.

The competition began with a doubleheader, involving Harmony SC and Salt Marsh United, the former winning in a 4-0 affair, as well as a game between Holland United and Duanvale FC. Holland scored the lone goal of that game.

Title sponsors, Duncans Complex, handed over a symbolic cheque for $2.8 million while the combination of associate sponsors, Falmouth Chicken, SimTours Ultimate Travel, Father Bull Restaurant, Clinicare Pharmacy, Xpress Sports, Advantage Auto, Mariott’s Funeral Home, Orion Wholesale & Meats, 369 Sports Bar & Night Club, Eccleston’s Auto Sales and Trelawny Credit Union, committed to $1.5 million.

The competition includes 10 teams broken down into two zones and will run from March to June. Games will be played on Saturday and Sunday.

General Secretary of the Trelawny Football Association (TFA), Dwight Jeremiah, said the sponsorship of the Major League would allow his organisation to fulfil its mandate of fostering development.

“The length of the competition, the more games played and players playing, is allowing for a greater chance of development,” Jeremiah said.

“These are the things we want in the competition. We also want to bring back the vibes of football in Trelawny because it has been on a low for a number of years. This year, we owe it to our sponsors,” he said.

Duanvale United FC, Spicey Hill FC, Kinloss FC, Coopers Pen FC and Holland FC will make up the competition’s Zone A. Zone B will include Harmony SC, Jackson Town FC, Salt Marsh United, Invaders SC and Ourkids Academy.

Each team is scheduled to play each other in their respective zones on a home-and-away basis. There will also be a one-off cross-zone game between each of the teams to create a table from one to 10.

The competition, will, from there, move to a Jamaica Premier League-like play-off format where the top two teams wait at the semifinal stage for competition from teams placed three to six, to make their way to the final four.

Prize money will be offered from the winners down to sixth place.

Jeremiah explained that the league has attracted an unprecedented number of sponsors, who will help to make sure teams receive 25 sets of jerseys, 25 socks, eight training balls, seven match balls and other equipment.

The Major League was formed in 1968. Last year’s winners, Duncans United, advanced to the JFF’s Tier II competition.

The Bounty Hall-based Harmony SC have been one of the more successful teams in the league over the years and are back again this season.

Head coach, Everett Mullings, is cautious about what to expect from Harmony’s season, likening it to a transition period for the club.

“The majority of our team is youths. Like age 20 and below and some seniors. We are just organising the Harmony programme. We are not expecting to win the league this season but to compete the best way we can. If we do win, it is a plus for us because the community is aiming for that. Our aim is to grow because it is a talented community over the years, producing national players.
