UEFA Investigating Merih Demiral

European football’s governing body, UEFA, has launched an investigation into Turkey defender Merih Demiral.

Demiral is alleged to have made an ultra-nationalist salute during his team’s round of 16 win over Austria at Euro 2024 in Germany on Tuesday.

The 26 year old scored twice for Turkey who booked their place in the quarterfinals.

Demiral celebrated his second goal with a “wolf salute” gesture associated with the far right extremist group grey wolves that are linked with Turkey’s ruling coalition party, The National Movement.

Demiral said the salute, which is banned in France and Austria, was pre planned in case he scored.
