IN THEIR first home match of the season, UWI Mona Women walked away with all three points, downing Real MoBay AFC 2-0 in a doubleheader at the UWI Mona Bowl yesterday in Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) action.
Lataya Sanchez gave UWI the lead from the spot in the 70th minute before substitute Thonesia Jarrett sealed the win in time added.
Real MoBay started the stronger of the two teams, pressing UWI in the opening stanza of the contest, but could not get past the experienced hands of Reggae Girl Chris-Ann Chambers between the sticks for UWI.
Real MoBay head coach, Leacroft Lettman, praised Chambers’ performance after the match, but expected more from his team’s attack.
“We played the game well but the end product is scoring, and if you’re not getting the ball in the back of the net, then you’re never going to win,” he said after the match.
“UWI has an outstanding goalkeeper, she is a national keeper. She played a vital role in organising their backline and it paid dividends for her team. Her leadership role has shown in the outcome of the game.”
Despite constant pressure from Real MoBay, it was UWI who broke the deadlock, in perhaps controversial fashion, after a counterattack saw them winning a penalty for an adjudged handball in the box.
Sanchez stepped up, making no mistake from 12 yards out.
Real MoBay came close to finding an equaliser in the 89th minute but Shaker Wellington’s shot from inside the box whistled agonisingly wide of the post.
In the last play of the game, UWI got their second after a clearance from goalkeeper Chambers set Jarrett through on goal, who made no mistake to finish into the bottom left corner.
The win sees UWI moving up to fourth in the standings on three points, just behind Cavalier on four.
In the first match of the afternoon, Los Perfectos remained perfect as they picked up their second win in a row, beating Wi-Fi United 2-0.
A brace from Andrene Smith led the efforts as she banged in goals on both sides of the half-time whistle, her first coming in the 17th minute and the second in the 52nd.
The win sees Los Perfectos maintaining their second-place spot, tied on points with league leaders Frazsiers Whip, who boast a better goal difference.
