“God is the greatest!” Those were some of the first words echoed by dancehall icon Adijah ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer as he took to the stage of the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, England, at the 2025 staging of the MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards.

The Worl’ Boss was filled with gratitude as he accepted this year’s honourary Impact Award at the popular music awards show.

“Think about this — I got locked up — did 13 years in prison. Meanwhile, I’m in prison; I’m diagnosed with Graves' disease. So, I’m fighting to be free, fighting my illness, fighting to keep my family together”, Palmer stated.

“And look how God great! I got nominated for a Grammy for an album I did in prison. Got released from prison, got engaged to my fiancée who is from England, and now I am here, and I can walk the red carpet at the MOBOs,” the entertainer said excitedly.

The Clarkes deejay was all smiles as he accepted his award alongside his son, Likkle Vybz, his fiancée, Sidem Öztürk, and Queen of the Dancehall, Spice, who was also the presenter of the award.

Vybz Kartel was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Reggae Album category for his album Party With Me. The award went to Bob Marley: One Love – Music Inspired by the Film.

"The word 'legend' is often an overused one, but in this case, it almost doesn't do him justice, the winner of the MOBO Impact Award is [none] other than the King of Dancehall," Spice said before presenting the award to Kartel.

“[Vybz Kartel] is a true pioneer of dancehall. He has redefined the genre with his fearless lyrics, infectious energy and groundbreaking sound… His impact stretches far beyond the shores of Jamaica, and his music has inspired a generation,” she added as the arena erupted in applause.

Palmer, while closing his acceptance speech, explained that the moment reminded him of the three life lessons his over decade-long trials have taught him about faith, change and forgiveness.

He exited the stage, award in hand, to one of his most impactful catchphrases, “I’m Out”.

Spice and Kartel also performed at the show.

In early announcements, Shenseea won the award for Best Caribbean Act. Popcaan, Skillibeng. Spice, Valiant and YG Marley were the other nominees in the category.

The MOBO Awards are a celebration of black music and culture in the United Kingdom. Kanya King and Andy Ruffell founded the event in 1996.
