Wolmer’s Boys will be hoping they can keep their good fortune intact when they face off against Denham Town High today in Zone E action of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Manning Cup competition.
The boys from Heroes’ Circle are coming off an opening 3-1 victory over St Jago High as they sit second in the group on goal difference behind Tivoli Gardens.
Wolmer’s, led by head coach Jerome Waite, are one of the favourites to advance from the group despite the team’s young core and inexperience at the Manning Cup level.
After their opening win on Monday, Waite said the team would continue to improve as they become more accustomed to playing in the under-19 age group.
“I think the youngsters played well. We had five players from the under-16s who were added to the squad, and all of them got the opportunity to play top flight at the schoolboy level,” he said. “It is always difficult because a lot of learning is taking place, and the more they play, it is the more they learn. There are always areas of improvement.”
Their opponents, Denham Town, will be hoping they can bounce back from their first game of the campaign, where they were thrashed 4-1 by west Kingston neighbours Tivoli Gardens High.
It will be a tough task for Denham Town, who are rooted at the foot of Zone E but who will be hoping their home support could help turn the tide against their more-fancied opponents.
Over in Zone D, Camperdown High are aiming to make it two wins in a row when they take to the field against Haile Selassie High.
The two teams will enter the contest with contrasting records as Camperdown edged Kingston Technical High 2-1 in their opening game of the group and Haile Selassie fell 3-0 to Calabar High.
Haile Selassie’s head coach, Linval Dixon, believes that his team has learnt from their defeat and will put in a much better showing against Camperdown in today’s fixture.
“It was a disappointing start, but this was the first game,” Dixon said after his team’s loss to Calabar..
“We played a good team. We won’t take anything away from that. Now it’s just for us to learn and to move forward. There are some areas we have to improve on, and once we get that fixed, we’ll come better and stronger.”
All games are set to kick off at 3:30 p.m.
