‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Nominated For ‘Best Movie’ At 2024 BET Awards

6 months ago 83

Paramount Pictures and Tuff Gong’s musical biopic Bob Marley: One Love has been nominated for “Best Movie” at the 2024 BET Awards.

The other nominees in the category are American Fiction, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Book of Clarence, The Color Purple, The Equalizer 3 and The Little Mermaid.

The film, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as Marley, Lashana Lynch as his wife Rita Marley, James Norton as Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, and several Jamaican artists, is now the fifth highest-grossing music biopic in the United States, according to Billboard. The Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) is currently No. 1, followed by the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton (2015), Elvis (2022), and the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line (2015).

As of May 2024, it has $96.8 million in the US and $177.1 million internationally, according to IMDB’s BoxOfficeMojo.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, a review-aggregation website for film and television, Bob Marley: One Love currently has 92% audience approval, more than film critics who have it at 44%.

The critics’ consensus is that “Kingsley Ben-Adir does an admirable job in the central role, but Bob Marley: One Love is ultimately a standard biopic that doesn’t do justice to its brilliant subject.” The Guardian, for example, criticized the Marley family-approved project for skirting some big questions about the musician.  Noting that the film appeared “unrelaxed and sanctified”, the paper noted that “biopics don’t get more authorised or anaesthetised than this ploddingly solemn account of reggae legend Bob Marley.”

The 2024 BET Awards, which bills itself Culture’s Biggest Night, will air live from Los Angeles on BET on Sunday, June 30, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

This year’s theme is “Standing on Culture.”

Canadian rapper Drake leads the nominations, scoring seven, including for Album Of The Year, Best Male Hip Hop Artist and Best Male Pop/R&B Artist, while Nicki Minaj received six nods, including for Best Collaboration, Best Female Hip Hop Artist and Video Of The Year.

 J. Cole, Sexyy Red, SZA, and Victoria Monét each have five nominations.

21 Savage, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Tyla, and Usher are tied with four nominations each.

The BET Awards were established in 2001 to celebrate black entertainers and other minorities in music, film, sports and philanthropy.
