Cavalier hit Federal United for double figures

As the rain poured, so did the goals as Cavalier drubbed Federal United 11-2 in a dominant display of attacking football yesterday to move atop the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) standings.

With 11 goals from four scorers, Shanel Spence (third, fifth, seventh, 52nd, 90th), Deshanna Cole (65th, 70th, 75th), Shadie Shirley (15th, 78th) and Janelle Graham (27th) netted the goals for the new league leaders.

Africke Beckford in the 29th minutes and Yasheika Lewis in first half added time tried their best to spare Federal United’s blushes.

It was a swift start to life for Cavalier as Spence would race to a hat trick within the opening 10 minutes.

She opened the scoring in the fourth minute when she picked up the ball just inside the box, then dropping a shoulder to dismiss her defender to fire her team into the lead.

Spence would return for her double just two minutes later, running through on goal to slip the ball past the goalkeeper.

The prolific forward did not wait long to pick up her hat trick as in the seventh minute, she got by two defenders to rifle home into the roof of the net.

Goal number four came in the 15th minute when Shirley picked up a loose ball outside the box to finish past the back-pedalling goalkeeper.

Graham would add the game’s fifth when she reacted first in the box to pounce on a parried save, with her effort flying into the top right from close range.

SPECULATIVE EFFORT

Federal United would add their mark on the game soon after, when a speculative effort from Beckford found the back of the net.

They would further cut the deficit as a snap shot from Lewis, the 11-year-old talent, caught the Cavalier goalkeeper flat-footed just before the half-time whistle.

Cavalier would continue their rampant hunt for goals in the second half when Spence got her fourth of the afternoon from the penalty spot.

Second-half substitute Cole would have an immediate impact on the match as she scored with her first action of the game in the 65th minute.

Cole picked up the ball at the half-line, nutmegged her marker, dribbled past Federal United’s backline on a determined run before applying a tidy finish.

Cole bagged her brace five minutes later when she was found free on the wing, before driving into the box and finishing at the near post.

Much like Spence, Cole did not have to wait long to complete her hat trick as with a swift turn of pace, she beat the goalkeeper to the ball in a foot race to slot into an empty net.

Shirley added the 10th goal for Cavalier in the 78th minute before Spence, in the 90th minute, added her fifth goal from the penalty spot and sealed the win.

Cavalier now move to the top of the JWPL standings with 19 points, one ahead of defending champions Frazsiers Whip, who were not in action this weekend.
