Opposition Spokesman with responsibility for affairs concerning Portmore, Fitz Jackson, says the attempt by the Holness administration to transform the municipality into the 15th parish was a return to political tribalism.
During his contribution to the sectoral debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Mr. Jackson called on Jamaicans to condemn the behaviour.
In January, Prime Minister Andrew Holness placed attempts to make Portmore Jamaica’s 15th parish on hold as the country geared up for local government elections.
Mr. Holness at the time said the government’s intention to create a new political administration for Portmore had nothing to do with trying to gain a political advantage. However, Mr. Jackson, says this was proved false.
He pointed to the prime minister’s failure to condemn then works minister, Everald Warmington’s, comment that separating Portmore would give the JLP control of the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation.
