KINGSTON (CMC):
Jamaica’s representative in the 2024/25 Concacaf W Champions Cup Frazsiers Whip endured a tough outing at the National Stadium, following a 13-0 drubbing at the hands of NJ/NY Gotham FC in Group A play on Wednesday.
Despite their determination, the Jamaican club found it difficult to keep up with the experienced Gotham FC side, who opened the scoring early in the 13th minute through Yazmeen Ryan. Ryan then doubled her tally just five minutes later before Mandy Freeman added a third for the visitors in the 39th minute.
Just before the break, Cece Kizer found the back of the net from a rebound in stoppage time to make it 4-0.
Frazsiers Whip struggled to contain Gotham’s relentless attack, with Jenna Nighswonger starting the second-half goal spree in the 47th minute. Gotham’s Taryn Torres came off the bench to score twice in quick succession in the 52nd and 53rd minutes, giving the US team a commanding 7-0 lead.
Despite moments of bravery from Frazsiers Whip’s defence, the home side couldn’t hold off further pressure. Lynn Williams and Jéssica Silva combined for Gotham’s next two goals in the 82nd and 84th minutes, while a misfortune saw Jamaican defender Nevillegail Able concede an own goal in the 85th minute.
Williams added her second and third goals of the match in the 86th and 90th+3 minutes, respectively, completing a hat-trick, while Ryan also netted a hat-trick in the 90th+2 minute, rounding out a dominant performance by Gotham.
The loss marks the end of Frazsiers Whip’s run in the tournament, as they exit the group stage with four defeats in their four games.
After the game Suen Gregory of Frazsiers Whip said it’s a young team and they are looking forward to competing again in the competition next year.
“This is the first time we are participating in this competition and I think we could do much more but we will go again,” Gregory said. She added that they were a ‘small’ team as the girls have been playing in the schoolgirls league and most have never played international matches before.
Gotham FC sit atop Group A with seven points following two wins and a draw and they head back to the US to face Tigres UANL Femenil at the Red Bull Arena on October 16.
