G2K Chides PNP’s ‘Hypocritical’ Stance on George Wright’s Reinstatement

The young professional arm of the JLP, Generation 2000, G2K, insists that gender-based violence and rehabilitation should not be exploited for political gain.

G2K argues that the issue is far too serious to be handled in the tribal, politically opportunistic, and hypocritical manner in which it says was displayed by PNP women during their media conference on Tuesday.

Robian Williams reports.

G2K says it notes that the women of the PNP, who were eerily silent when several of their own, were arrested and charged for alleged acts of violence, found their voices on Tuesday.

G2K named Jolyan Silvera, Mikael Phillips and Natalie Neita-Garvey.

G2K says it further notes that the PNP women chided the JLP for its re-admission of George Wright as a member.

The group says this is despite the fact that Wright has taken several mitigating steps, including counselling over two years, and has recently married.

Wright resigned from the JLP in June 2021 amid public pressure over a viral video that showed a man beating a woman with a stool.

But he was never charged.

G2K is condemning what it describes as the opportunistic display by the PNP women, including Patricia Duncan-Sutherland, Gabrielle Morris, Angela Brown Burke, and Denise Daley.

They say it appears the group of PNP women are attempting to prey upon the emotions of Jamaicans while showing up their own inconsistency and hypocrisy.

G2K adds that the PNP Women’s Movement was also silent when it came to public attention that the female partner of Phillip Paulwell was charged with murdering the mother of one of his children and her 10-month-old child.

The youth arm says it’s hopeful that the PNP women will conduct introspection, recognise their hypocrisy, and apply a more serious approach to the crucial issues of domestic violence and rehabilitation.

G2K is also questioning why the PNP women failed to clarify at their media conference the circumstances surrounding the murder of Mrs. Melissa Silvera, allegedly by their colleague.

The PNP’s leadership had initially announced via social media that Mrs. Silvera passed away in her sleep.

G2K says it sympathises with every victim of domestic violence.

The youth arm adds that the Jamaica Labour Party administration is strong in protecting women from gender-based violence, including the opening of shelters for victims of domestic abuse.

They say the Holness administration has also established a hotline for victims of abuse to call and access help.

According to G2K, Jamaica deserves a better and more consistent approach from women who aspire to lead the country than what was displayed by the PNP women at their media conference.
