TWO late goals, the first by Demar Thomas and a second from Kevin Wright, lifted Green Pond High to 2-0 victory over Herbert Morrison Technical High in their Zone A ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup clash at the Herbert Morrison playing field yesterday.
The result lifts Green Pond to the top of the zone with eight points. Cornwall College are second with six and Herbert Morrison remain fourth with three points.
Green Pond wasted many early chances but just when many fans thought the game would end 0-0, they got their reward. In the first minute of injury time (91st) Thomas jumped above everyone to head a free kick into the Herbert Morrison net.
Before the cheers for the opener ended, Wright struck in the 92nd minute to leave their rivals stunned.
Gregory Daley, Green Pond’s coach, said the set-play which produced the first goal was something they had been working on since preseason.
“The header from the captain was something we practised in preseason, and he finally got one right. I am satisfied because we had to manage the game, and that is what I wanted them to do. It’s not about starting the game fast, scoring goals and then losing the game,” Daley said.
“The game started really slow, they were not coming at us, so all we did was to possess the ball and move it around. They are young boys and they are going to make mistakes but we have to live with that,” he added.
The disappointment of the Herbert Morrison supporters was evident as they kept shouting unkind words to the technical staff.
Despite the team’s third defeat, Gary Grant, the assistant coach of Herbert Morrison, praised his players.
“We just lacked concentration in the last couple of minutes as before we actually stuck to the plan,” Grant said. “Going into the final game and next round we have to restructure and come again. We have to go back to training and fix everything that we did wrong.”
