REGGAE GIRLZ assistant coach Deon Burton said despite an aggregate 7-0 loss to Mexico across too friendly internationals in the United States, there were positives to take back to Jamaica.
Jamaica lost the first game against Mexico at the CPKC Stadium in Kansas 0-3 on Saturday before going to the Shell Energy Stadium on Tuesday, where four first-half goals left them without answers.
The Reggae Girlz conceded four goals in the first 25 minutes, with a brace from Alice Soto and one each from Lizbeth Ovalle and Scarlett Camberos, to be 0-4 down at the break.
However, the Girlz’ performance drastically improved after the interval, and Burton said that is how they need to start games, to give themselves a better chance of getting results.
“Another bad start to the game. They showed character in the second half. They could have gone under and not done what they did in the second half. So, credit to the team for showing character and a bit of fight at the end
“We said it from the first game, the intensity wasn’t there again. I don’t know why. I cannot put my finger on it.
“But the second half was a different story; and I think we should have got something out of the second half because they deserve it, and that is what we want from them.
“If we can start games like that and take it to half-time on a more level playing field, then the second half, if we carried on how we did, we would have maybe got some joy,” he said.
The Reggae Girlz conceded seven goals over the two matches and scored none, but Burton was pleased with a number of the individual performances in the group over the two matches.
BETTER PERFORMANCE
“There are a few that we definitely spoke with and marked down on certain areas when they were in a different position in the first game to the second game, and [they gave] a much better performance and outcome from their own individual side.
“It is good how we ended. The overall tour wasn’t a success but it finished on a positive. We had lots of territory in the second half of this game, and we pressured and pressed from the front.
“We caused Mexico a lot of problems, and with a little more quality at the end, maybe we could have got a goal.
“That is the positive to take forward, and when we come to camp again, we will start on the same foot and start with a better purpose,” he added.
