Jamaica’s Unemployment Rate Rises Marginally to 3.7%

Jamaica’s unemployment rate was measured at 3.7 per cent at the end of January 2025, marginally higher than the 3.5 per cent recorded at the end of the October 2024.

That’s according to the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, STATIN.

In October of 2024, Jamaica recorded an unprecedented unemployment rate of 3.5 per cent. The lowest in the country’s history.

However, as of January 2025, it inched up slightly to 3.7 per cent. That’s according to the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, STATIN.

In a release on Tuesday, STATIN reports that in January 2025, there were 1,419,500 employed people. This reflects an increase in employed persons of 13,800 or 1 per cent.

The largest growth in employment was observed in the occupational groups ‘technicians and associate professionals’ and ‘professionals’.

The data from STATIN shows that by industry, the largest gains occurred in education, human health, and social work activities.

The 3.7 per cent, unemployment rate in January was 1.7 percentage points lower than in the same quarter of 2024.

Labour force participation remains higher among men at 74.3 per cent compared to 62.7 per cent among women.

Youth unemployment for the period was 12.3 per cent
