President of the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association, JMEA, Sydney Thwaites says the ongoing trade war between the United States and other countries could open multiple trade opportunities for the Caribbean.
Mr. Thwaites offered his perspectives on the ongoing trade saga while speaking on Cliff Hughes Online on Thursday.
Mahiri Stewart has that story.
The United States and Canada have announced retaliatory tariffs in an escalating trade dispute.
The back and forth started on February 1 when the U.S President, Donald Trump, signed an executive order imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods.
Canada responded a day later with retaliatory tariffs.
Mr. Thwaites says the JMEA is keeping an eye on the developments to gauge how it will affect trade in the region.
However, the JMEA President says there may be opportunities for Caribbean countries.
He says the back and forth has the potential to provide the region with new trade markets.
He says Jamaica has several existing advantages.
Mr. Thwaites says discussions between CARICOM and the U.S are taking place in order to stabilize trade agreements.
He adds that the resistance by Canadians to buy American products provide gaps that Jamaica can fill.
