JPL: Waterhouse back in sixth

1 week ago 11

Andre Fletcher scored the only goal as Waterhouse defeated Molynes United 1-0 to climb back into sixth place in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.

Although chances were few on the day, both teams created good openings in the first half. However, it was Fletcher who made the most of his chance early in the second half to give Waterhouse the vital win.

The Drewsland-based team jumped to 49 points, two more than Tivoli Gardens in seventh, and four clear of Racing United in eighth.

Waterhouse coach Marcel Gayle said their opponents made it difficult, but Fletcher once again showed his character and delivered for the team in another critical match.

“It was a tough one from Molynes. They stood behind the ball and tried to make it tough for us. We got some inroads but we were not good in front of goal. Nevertheless, we are grateful for the three points.

“When we talk about character and players stepping up for the team and taking responsibility, Andre Fletcher is doing a good job so far. I just hope it continues,” he said.

Tivoli can retake sixth spot with a victory tonight, but Gayle noted that it’s a long way to the end of the round, and the most important thing is that they continue winning.

“We have to do what we have to do. And the situation means we have to try win all our games. We can’t do anything about what is out of our control. What is in our control is that every game is a final, and we have to take every game serious,” he added.

The defeat stretched Molynes’ winless run in the league to eight matches, and coach Jermaine Thomas pointed out that they continued to miss chances and this denied them something from the game.

“It was a tough one but close, I think. We had some good look-ins, and played well for most of the game.

“But at this stage of the competition, good is just not good enough. We could have done a little better inside the final third. We got some good chances and just never converted,” he stated.

Molynes remain second from bottom in 13th place on 29 points, six ahead of bottom-of-the-table Vere Phoenix, but only three behind Humble Lion and Harbour View in 12th and 11th places, respectively.
