The J. Wray & Nephew Foundation, JWNF, says it has significantly increased its investment in education, awarding scholarships totaling over $26 million in 2024.
The foundation says this represents an increase of almost 37 per cent when compared to last year’s $19.2 million disbursement.
In a statement to the media, JWNF noted that disbursement includes 10 STEM scholarships that have been awarded to students from communities located in close proximity to J. Wray & Nephew Limited’s operations.
JWNF says this expansion aligns with Jamaica’s national push for STEM education and includes an additional 189 scholarships for promising scholars.
It says this is an investment that comes on the heels of Prime Minister Andrew Holness’s recently announced plans for six new specialised STEM schools across Jamaica, underscoring the growing national focus on these critical fields.
CEO of JWN Foundation, Tanikie McClarthy Allen says when the revised scholarship programme was conceptualised in 2016, the goal was to impact community students in a meaningful way.
Mrs Allen says they wanted to see them excel as individuals that serve as examples for others in the communities and ultimately improve the legacy in their areas.
