KC avoid banana peel, knock the stuffing out of Penwood

KINGSTON COLLEGE (KC) blanked Penwood High School 7-0 to avenge their opening-day Manning Cup draw at the Stadium East Sports Complex yesterday.

The ‘Purples’ stayed three points clear at the top of the group with 16 points. With Campion in second on 13 after their 4-0 win over Cumberland, while Penwood dropped to third with 10.

KC coach Vassell Reynolds said his team took Penwood lightly in their first meeting, which ended 2-2, but said were never going to make the same mistake twice.

“We took them very lightly in the first match. We were very complacent. We conceded in the first five seconds. Today, we were never going to make that mistake again.

“Like today, we created a number of chances (in the first match) and didn’t capitalise on them. Today we created the chances and capitalised on 80-85 per cent. So those two things were the difference,” he said.

“And I think we are improving. We played much better, especially in the first half. There were improvements in many areas. Far better than the first match.”

The North Street-based school was quick out of the blocks thanks to James Gallimore’s deflected strike after only two minutes.

Ten minutes later, captain Shareef Ricketts added a second from the penalty spot, before Kajay Fletcher made it 3-0 in the 21st minute.

Matrim Martin then added a quick brace to make it 5-0 after 38 minutes, and Deshawn Byfield scored in the 41st to give KC a 6-0 lead at the break.

Despite creating a number of good chances after the interval, KC struggled to add to their lead.

However, they eventually got the breakthrough 10 minutes from the end when Gallimore was brought down by Penwood’s goalkeeper in the box, and Ricketts converted the spot kick to seal the win.

Despite the setback, Penwood coach Robert Garwood said the team was still in the running for a second-round spot.

“I asked them to stay behind the ball. But the indiscipline crept in. But I cannot kill them because they have done well so far. And we can still advance,” he said.
