Long-serving Member of Parliament for North East Manchester, Audley Shaw, has endorsed councillor for the Craighead division, Omar Miller, in what’s shaping up to be a competitive race to be his successor in the constituency.
Shaw made the endorsement on Sunday night at a Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, constituency conference held at Christiana High School.
Shaw has served as MP for 31 years. He confirmed on the weekend that he will not be seeking re-election.
Miller, meanwhile has been councillor for close to 14 years. Shaw told supporters there was no reason for him not to endorse him.
Principal of Holmwood Technical High, Hidran McKulsky, has also expressed an interest in the seat.
Meanwhile, Councillor Miller says Audley Shaw has been his role model.
North East Manchester, which comprises three divisions – Craighead, Christiana and Walderston – has been in hands of the JLP since 1993.
The party lost to the PNP in two of the three divisions in the February 2024 local government election. But Councillor Miller says general election day will be a different story.
