Jamaica will join the global community is observing World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) on March 15, under theme ‘Fair and Responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in Consumer Relations.’
Activities will take place locally under the sub-theme ‘Consumer and Technology: Are you Protected?’.
Speaking at a JIS Think Tank on Thursday (March 7), the CAC’s Chief Executive Officer, Dolsie Allen, said that the observance will be used to highlight the challenges technology poses for consumers and entrepreneurs.
“Technology has played a significant role in the changes we are experiencing in education, health, and shopping experiences,” she noted.
“While we embrace and revel in the convenience of engaging in online activities, there are still individuals with nefarious intents who would want to challenge the system,” she pointed out.
Given the mandate of CAC, which is to enforce the Consumer Protection Act and facilitate ethical behaviour in the marketplace between vendors and consumers, the CEO emphasised, “we want our consumers to be aware of the different changes happening in the world and to see how best we can manage these areas”.
As such, activities to mark WCRD will serve to deepen consumer and entrepreneurial awareness.
The CAC, in conjunction with the National Consumers League, will host a church service at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church located at 120 Old Hope Road in Kingston, on Sunday, March 10, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
On WCRD, there will be several media activities, including a message by the Minister of Industry, Investment, and Commerce, Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill.
Exhibitions will also take place at select libraries and schools across the island.
