A by-election will be held in North East St. Ann on September 30 this year as the governing Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, begins to ramp up its political machinery ahead of general elections which are constitutionally due in a year.
Nomination day is September 11.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced the dates at the post-cabinet media conference at Jamaica House a short while ago.
The prime minister also revealed that government senator and cabinet minister, Matthew Samuda, has resigned from both legislative and executive duties.
Samuda has reportedly temporarily stepped down to pave the way for his nomination as the JLP’s candidate in the constituency.
It was announced on Tuesday that embattled Member of Parliament for North East St. Ann, Marsha Smith, had resigned with immediate effect.
