The development of road infrastructure and the handling of the economy have been identified as the biggest successes of the Holness administration, even though a notable group of respondents believe there’s nothing to identify as a major achievement of the governing Jamaica Labour Party, JLP.
That’s according to the latest Nationwide/Bluedot poll, powered by Total Tools.
The poll found that 18 per cent of respondents could not identify any major success of the Holness administration.
Mahiri Stewart reports.
The poll which was conducted between September 6 and 19 this year, found that public approval of the Holness administration is waning.
This, as the larger number of respondents, 18 per cent, believe there is nothing successful to attribute to the administration in 2024.
In September 2021, the administration’s handling of the pandemic was considered its top success.
As the immediate impact of the pandemic lessened, the focus shifted to the economic stability of the country and infrastructure development.
By September 2022, its handling of the pandemic continued to hold the number one spot and in 2023, economic stability rose to the top as the administration’s best success story.
The other two success stories for the administration in September 2023, according to respondents, was its development of road infrastructure at number two and its Covid response at number three.
The results of the latest poll, done between September 6 and 19 this year, show a notable evolution in the public perception held by Jamaicans about what they consider to be the successes of the JLP administration.
This is the first time since 2021 that the question- What would you consider to be the biggest success of the JLP administration has returned ‘NOTHING’ as its top response.
The Bluedot researchers say the response of ‘NOTHING’ was largely driven by responses by people who identified themselves as PNP supporters.
The government’s work on road infrastructure and its handling of the economy have been identified as second and third respectively on the JLP administration’s list of successes.
Fifteen per cent of respondents say the government’s handling of road infrastructure development is a top achievement. The economy follows with 14 per cent viewing it as a significant success.
Meanwhile, in the breakout of the data, 27 per cent of PNP supporters noted there was nothing to identify as a top success of the Holness administration.
Another 18 per cent of PNP supporters identified corruption as number two and 12 per cent said the development of road infrastructure.
For JLP supporters, 25 per cent of them identified the government’s handling of the economy as its biggest success.
Seventeen per cent of Labourites believed the development of road infrastructure is the Holness administration’s second significant success story, while 9per cent believe housing assistance programmes is the third biggest achievement of the government.
