Prime Minister Andrew Holness says anyone aiming to lead Jamaica, whether as prime minister or in another top post, should relinquish any other citizenship they may be holding.
The prime minister took to ‘X’ on Tuesday morning to reiterate his position, as calls mount for Opposition Leader Mark Golding to renounce his British citizenship.
Holness says Jamaica is his final destination and he has no escape plan.
According to the prime minister, this is why he wants what’s in the best interest of the country.
Writing on ‘X’ he asked, “when you can run away from Jamaica what interest do you truly have in what’s good for us?”
Prime Minister Holness says citizens should never doubt their leader’s loyalty or worry that they might have a way out if things go wrong.
He says a leader with another citizenship might not face the full force of the laws in Jamaica and could have split loyalties.
Holness says Jamaicans need to know their leaders are fully committed to the country’s best interests without any other influences.
It’s on this basis that he believes persons aspiring to lead the country or assume any other leadership position should renounce any other citizenship they hold.
