Opposition junior spokesman on finance, Cleveland Tomlinson, says the policies articulated by president of the People’s National Party, PNP, Mark Golding on Sunday were informed by what the people need at this time.

Golding says the next PNP administration will cap monthly student loan payments at an affordable percentage of the borrower’s monthly income.

He says a PNP government would implement a student loan forgiveness programme for teachers, based on their years of service in the system.

Mr. Tomlinson says the policy prescriptions of the PNP, to include its PORTIA initiative, were conceptualised after a deliberate process of engagement with Jamaicans.

He dismissed criticism that the PORTIA initiative is a gimmick, intended to use the name of the former prime minister to gain political traction.
