The opposition People’s National Party, PNP, has criticised the Jamaica Labour Party’s, JLP, move to reinstate Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert as its standard bearer in South Trelawny.
The PNP says the move is highly contemptuous of Jamaica’s judicial system, given that Dalrymple-Philibert has eight outstanding criminal charges against her.
The Opposition party says it also signals what it describes as a disturbing disregard for accountability.
In veiled references to the prime minister’s own uncertified statutory declarations, the PNP says the reinstatement of the South Trelawny politician is an attempt to normalise lapses in integrity.
The PNP also mentions the JLP’s nomination of Kim Brown Lawrence in the February 2024 local government elections, while she was before the courts answering fraud and corruption charges related to events at the Ministry of Education and Caribbean Maritime University.
The PNP says Jamaicans deserve leaders who uphold the highest standards of transparency and who respect the rule of law.
