Rusea’s, Frome hunt security in big Zone B clash

FROME TECHNICAL need just three points to cement a place in the second round of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup and they will be seeking to secure them when they face Zone B rivals Rusea’s in a mega clash at the Collin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea today at 3:30 p.m.

Three teams are still in contention for two second-round places from the zone, with Anchovy still in with a chance of making it.

The 2023 Ben Francis KO finalists, Frome, have 19 points, with Rusea’s in second with 16 and Anchovy third on 12.

It is easy to see why this match – the second of two meetings in the first round of the competition between these two – holds such prestige.

They boast some of schoolboy football’s most rabid supporters, and whenever these schools meet, it is usually fireworks both on and off the field.

In their first meeting this season on Monday, the two schools played to a 0-0 draw in Frome and Rusea’s will be seeking a win to draw level with their rivals at the top of the zone.

The Westmoreland-based Frome are continuing from where they left off last year, winning four of their five games played this season and will be hoping to continue their impressive form and stretch their unbeaten run to five games.

In the meantime, the young Rusea’s team came into this season as one of the underdogs but following a surprising 1-0 defeat to Anchovy, they have recovered and won their last four games convincingly.

That loss means Rusea’s are still five points adrift of a second-round berth.

In their return clash with Anchovy, they won 5-1. They had earlier clipped Green Island 3-2, blanked Knockalva 5-0, and defeated Cambridge 3-1.

Rusea’s are second only in daCosta Cup wins to Cornwall College with 12 titles after capturing their first title in 1984. Their last title was won in 2017.

Frome have managed to land just one in 2003.

Sixteen daCosta Cup games will be played across the island today.
