RUSEA’S HIGH School made light work of Anchovy High School’s unbeaten run in the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup, cruising to a 5-1 victory in their Zone B clash at the Collin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea yesterday.
Despite a half-an-hour delay due to a wet outield, Rusea’s were out of the blocks quickly, Roshawn Dillion taking just eight minutes to put them ahead.
But Anchovy were far from a beaten team, Verdane Clarke bringing them level shortly after when he jumped highest to meet a free kick.
Damar Sailman put Rusea’s back in the ascendency in the 28th minute before Rushane ‘Messi’ Burt struck n the 31st to put daylight between the teams. Maliek Headed joined the party in the 41st to end the game as a contest. Kemarley Weekley scored the lone goal of the second half, putting his mark on the referee’s matchcard in the 89th.
Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis, coach of Rusea’s, said despite the win, the team didn’t play the way he wanted them to.
“This game we definitely needed to win. Yes, we got some goals but we didn’t play the way we wanted to. We still gave up some plays in the middle and allowed the other team to play the way they wanted to. They came back and equalised and we had to get back into anothe gear to get the goals,” Davis said.
“Nevertheless, I am happy with the three points. The field was wet and slippery and there was nothing we could do about that. Overall, we controlled the tempo of the game,” Davis added.
Clevon Patterson, assistant coach of Anchovy, said his team did not come to grips with the underfoot conditions.
“Truth be told, conditions weren’t favourable. That is what caused us to actually lose the game. The water stopped three goals for us. If it was a dry surface it would be a different reflection of the game today. Nevertheless, we have to give credit to our boys,” Patterson said.
The result pushes Anchovy down to second, tied with Frome on 12 points but ahead on goal difference. Rusea’s are now on nine points in third.
