Today is nomination day in North East St. Ann. Candidates will have the opportunity to present themselves for the September 30 by-election in the constituency.

The Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, are set to nominate Matthew Samuda. The People’s National Party, PNP, have decided to boycott the by-election.

A man, David Fritz Anderson, aka ‘Five Pound’ says he intends to run as an independent candidate.

The last by-election in the constituency was in December 2010.

At the time, the JLP’s Shahine Robinson defeated Devon Evans of the Marcus Garvey People’s Progressive Party. The PNP also bypassed that by-election.

Nominations are set for 10 am to 2 pm at the office of the Returning Officer in the constituency.

Anyone wishing to contest the election is required to pay $15,000. They are also required to complete a nomination form signed by 10 or more electors registered to vote in North East St. Ann.

The nomination form should then be delivered to the office of the Returning Officer.

Director of Elections, Glasspole Brown, says 43,000 people are eligible to vote in the constituency.

The by-election is projected to cost almost $30 million to execute.
