Opposition spokesman on justice, Senator Donna Scott-Mottley, is calling on the government to repair failing infrastructure at some of the island’s courthouses.
In a statement on Monday, Senator Scott-Mottley said the judiciary and court staff have been working under very poor conditions.
She says there have been reports highlighting deplorable conditions at the St Andrew Parish Court in Half Way Tree and the St Catherine Parish Court in Spanish Town.
She says the bathroom facilities at the courts pose health risks to the staff and public because of their unsanitary state.
Senator Scott-Mottley also says the Supreme Court in downtown Kingston is infested with pests and termites.
In addition to health risks, she says the poor facilities also disrupt the proper functioning of the court system.
