Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Senator Matthew Samuda, says he’s started the process to renounce his British citizenship.
He’s calling on president of the People’s National Party, Mark Golding, to follow his lead and start the process to renounce his British citizenship.
In a statement moments ago, Senator Samuda, said “I am advanced in the process of renouncing my British citizenship which I acquired at birth.”
The question of dual citizens re-emerged recently when it was revealed that Opposition Leader Mark Golding holds dual Jamaican/British citizenship.
The governing Jamaica Labour Party, led by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, has been strident that no person seeking to lead Jamaica should be a dual citizen.
Senator Samuda says his move to renounce his British citizen arose from the recent conversations in the public domain.
“I voluntarily took the decision to retain Jamaican citizenship only and renounce British citizenship after having carefully listened to recent public discourse concerning the issue of dual citizenship,” said Senator Samuda.

May 30, 2024
Below is a statement from Senator Matthew Samuda:
“I am advanced in the process of renouncing my British citizenship which I acquired at birth.
I voluntarily took the decision to retain Jamaican citizenship only and renounce British citizenship after having carefully listened to recent public discourse concerning the issue of dual citizenship.
I had begun the process of renunciation prior to today by completing relevant forms. In response to public enquiries, I wish to make my decision to renounce clear.
I’d strongly advise the Opposition Leader to take a similar course of action.
