St Lucia will honour Olympic 100 metres gold medallist Julien Alfred with a public holiday on September 27.
St Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced that the day will be called “Julien Alfred Day.”
Alfred won the Caribbean island nation’s first Olympic medals in any sport, taking 100 metres gold and 200 metres silver in Paris.
St. Lucia’s permanent secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Uralise Delaire, says Alfred is expected to arrive in Saint Lucia on September 24 and be celebrated until she leaves September 29.
Alfred grew up in the capital of Castries. She won all of her races at a school sports day, and a librarian recommended her to a club coach.
She attended St. Catherine high school in Jamaica, then matriculated at the University of Texas, where she has trained under coach Edrick Floreal.
The 23-year-old will also be honoured by her primary school.
On Julien Alfred Day, all of St. Lucia will come out to celebrate the Olympian at the Daren Sammy stadium.
