MONEY MISER’s businesslike victory at a mile in the O & S Tack Room Trophy, a month ago, sets up the 2000 Guineas, Jamaica Derby and St Leger runner-up of last season for back-to-back overnight-allowance wins in Sunday’s Typewriter Trophy at seven and a half furlongs.
Following two less-than-convincing efforts at sprint distances early July and August, MONEY MISER returned wound-up for the O & S Tack Room at a suitable trip with the gamble on.
Carrying 122lb, MONEY MISER swooped down on BURLAP’s cracking splits of 45.3, 57.4 and 1:12.3, quickening away from United States-bred DIGITAL ONE, who tried to follow, before outclassing POWER FROM ABOVE, who attempted to close from off the pace.
Though tackling overnight-allowance winners this time around, MONEY MISER is still in his middle-distance comfort zone, holding aces against his four-year-old counterparts and light enough at 120lb to pick apart older rivals with youth and staying power on his side.
Having proven better than any four-year-old in the line-up as a three-year-old last season, MONEY MISER has nothing to fear from ALL FOR LOVE nor United States-bred SISTREN TREASURE.
Among the older runners, LABAN, MARCH AND SHOOT, BABYLIKE and PRESS CONFERENCE can profess to form. However, MONEY MISER, who won impressively, chasing torrid splits, should have the bead on the quartet.
LABAN flattered against MAJOR DANGER on August 6, only to deceive 11 days later in weaker company, finishing fourth behind FEARLESS SOUL, whereas both his conqueror and third-place ATLANTIC CONVOY returned to dismiss rivals in their respective events.
With inconsistency possibly caused by age, seven-year-old LABAN remains questionable against in-form MONEY MISER. MARCH AND SHOOT will enjoy the trip especially with bustling Phillip Parchment called in aboard the stayer. However, calling in a claiming rider to shed weight would have been a better option than summoning Parchment to go overweight by approximately six pounds.
BABYLIKE has the handicaps and a claiming rider to her advantage but is also plagued by inconsistency though working well for her second run off a four-month break.
On raw form, PRESS CONFERENCE appeals but is at his best at around six and a half furlongs, leaving him exposed to MONEY MISER in the run for the wire.
