“One Robb!” was the resounding chant from Holy Trinity High supporters when second-half substitute Christopher Robb scored the all-important goal as the hosts clipped Papine High 1-0 for their first-ever victory at their school field in the ISSA Manning Cup yesterday.
Holy Trinity made the switch to host their home games on the school compound for the first time ever last weekend.
While the match was of academic interest as both teams are out of contention for a spot in the second round, Holy Trinity gave their fans much to celebrate with their first home win in the school’s history.
The home team was in full control throughout much of the game and their head coach Delano Campbell felt on any other day, the match would have ended in a heavy victory for his team.
They created multiple clear-cut chances throughout the first half but were let down by poor finishing.
Campbell said this has been a recurring theme of their campaign this season.
“The team has been playing like this all season,” Campbell explained. “They are always creating a lot of chances, even against better quality opposition. They are good players who can play at this level, and today they showed some zeal and some zest for the game and got the result at the end.”
The inability to finish in front of goal continued to haunt Holy Trinity in the second half. They thought they had found the winner just before the hour mark but an offside call in the build-up play saw the goal disallowed.
As the time dwindled there were many chances for Holy Trinity but they were kept out by a resolute Papine defence.
In added time, Robb went clear in a counterattack and slotted home with ease to snatch the victory and all three points.
The win sees Holy Trinity move up to third in the group on seven points, behind zone leaders St George’s College (STGC) and St Catherine High, both tied on 19.
With their final match of the season against Norman Manley High at home on Friday, Campbell said the aim is to end their campaign on a high in front of their fans.
“The objective is to get to 10 points at the end of the season. The school would not have got to double digits in the Manning Cup for about four seasons now.”
He continued, “We cannot advance to the next round so that is out aim and the boys are definitely fighting for it.”
