‘Unfortunate’ Politicians Were ‘Forced’ to Renounce British Citizenships – Commentator

2 months ago 11

Political commentator, Lloyd B. Smith, says he’s disappointed parliamentarians had to be pressured by the public to renounce their dual citizenship.

His comment follows Nationwide’s report on Thursday which revealed that Opposition Leader Mark Golding has officially renounced his British citizenship.

Two other politicians, the Jamaica Labour Party’s Matthew Samuda and opposition spokesman on finance, Julian Robinson, have also completed the process of renunciation.

Mr. Smith does not believe their delayed decision to cut their foreign ties will affect the outcome of the upcoming general elections.

Mr. Smith says in a sovereign state like Jamaica, anyone seeking to represent the people should pledge allegiance solely to the country.
