Veteran journalist and broadcaster Robert ‘Bobby’ Fray was among the fans at the National Stadium on yesterday’s third day of competition of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs).
Fray, a past student of both Jamaica College and Kingston College, has been attending Champs since 1961.
“I went to my first championships in 1961 at Sabina Park when I was in first form at Jamaica College,” stated Fray, who confirmed that he also attended Kingston College, the defending champions.
According to Fray, the competition now is no different from former years.
“It is more or less the same,” the level of competition is the same, he said.
Fray said he was impressed by the run from Excelsior High’s Damor Miller in the Class One boys’ 100 metres final, the final event on Wednesday night.
“I really enjoyed the Class One 100m final. It has been the best moment so far for me at the championships,” he said.
Fray stated that he is looking forward to seeing other events.
“For the next couple days I am looking forward to competition in the 200m, 800m, sprint and intermediate hurdles,” said Fray, who stated that his favourite event is the 200m.
In closing, Fray appealed to young athletes to continue competing in the sport.
“I am hoping our young athletes continue competing in the sport and do well as this is a way to sell themselves to the world,” said Fray, who also stated that he still keeps abreast of what is happening in netball and cricket.
