Member of Parliament for South West. St. Catherine, Everald Warmington, has hit back at the Integrity Commission’s claim that it has been properly audited.
Last week the Integrity Commission rejected comments from the MP that it has not been audited in years.
However, in a rebuttal in Parliament on Tuesday, Mr. Warmington says audited financial statements are not the same as a proper performance audit.
Chevon Campbell tells us more.
That’s the comment that triggered a strong rebuke from the Integrity Commission.
It says its affairs have been properly audited since it came into existence. The commission said it was shocked and concerned that Mr. Warmington and other MPs would be unaware of this.
However, Mr. Warmington says that statement is misleading.
Mr. Warmington says a mere financial audit is woefully inadequate from a body that receives such a significant sum from the public purse.
The South West St. Catherine MP says the Auditor General, Pamela Munroe-Ellis, as a commissioner has also made herself complicit in this mischaracterisation.
Mr. Warmington says the Mrs. Munroe-Ellis’ department would normally carry out the required value for money audit. However, her position on the commission presents a conflict of interest.
He says the Integrity Commission’s Oversight Committee of Parliament must now find an independent auditor for the anti-corruption body.
