Chief executive officer, CEO, of Wigton Energy, Gary Barrow, says the company is set to incorporate solar energy into its services alongside wind energy.
This follows an announcement from the company of its award of a near 50 megawatt solar project. This is in the 100 megawatt renewable energy tender issued by the Generation Procurement Entity.
Wigton also announced that it will replace its 20.7 megawatt wind facility with a solar plant. It says this will increase its solar energy-generating capacity to 70 megawatts.
According to Wigton, this would cement the company as the largest solar energy provider in the English-speaking Caribbean and by far the largest renewable energy facility in Jamaica.
Wigton says the move was approved by Energy Minister Daryl Vaz.
Mr. Barrow believes Jamaica is properly positioned to take advantage of renewable energy in ways that help both the environment and the economy.
