Wolmer’s take control of Zone E

WOLMER’S BOYS asserted their dominance in Zone E of the ISSA Manning Cup yesterday after defeating Tivoli Gardens 4-2 in a tightly contested top-of-the-table clash at the Mico University College field.

Wolmer’s continued their imperious march in the first round with their fourth win in a row to go three points clear at the top.

Addon Daye and Romie Henry added their names to the Wolmerians’ score sheet while Ryan-Oneil Francis and Sanjay Sinclair scored for the West Kingston-based school. There were two own goals

Wolmers head coach Jerome Waite said he expected the strong challenge from Tivoli as they have proven their quality as recent Walker Cup champions.

“Both teams really gave it their all and Tivoli did not lay down and die, they showed that they have pedigree,” Waite said.

“What they did today showed that they are a competitive team. Wolmer’s, we dominated the first half but Tivoli came back and it was a different ball game in the second half. They pushed a little more in attack and we cracked in that area but nevertheless, we got all of four goal, albeit two own goals from Tivoli.”

The home team started early in the game through Daye who opened the scoring in the 22nd minute by chipping the goalkeeper with a deft finish.

Misfortune struck minutes later for Tivoli who conceded another goal minutes later through an own goal from defender Horace Morgan.

Wolmers would go 3-0 up in the 37th minute when Henry finished off a play started by Daquan Duhaney.

Tivoli would get one back right before half time, however – a penalty for the visitors was converted by Francis who was calm from the spot.

There was drama in the second half leading up to Tivoli’s second goal as the linesman close to the action flagged for a foul which caused the Wolmerians to stop playing.

However, the referee saw no infraction and allowed the play to continue, which resulted in Sinclair slotting home uncontested.

The game would end in comical fashion as Tashawn McBean fired into his own goal after he mistakenly believed the referee had blown his whistle for a penalty.

Wolmer’s now move to 12 points atop the zone while Tivoli sit second place with nine.
