DESPITE ALREADY securing second-round berths of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition, a lot will still be at stake for defending champions Clarendon College and Denbigh High when they close out today’s final set of matches in Zone H preliminary-round action.
Clarendon College, in second place with 18 points, will go up against group leaders Central High, who have 19, at the Wembley Centre of Excellence, while Denbigh, on third with 16, will be at home to Lennon, who are on 10. Both games will begin at 2 p.m.
Clarendon College, who lost their second game of the preliminary round on Saturday to Denbigh, will be hoping to get back to winning ways and will be hoping to avenge their 1-0 defeat to Central when they met earlier.
A win for the Lenworth Hyde-coached team will put them on top of the group, which will be crucial to the second-round group they will find themselves in.
After having one of their better seasons in the competition, the Garfield Carney-coached Denbigh are coming off a high after surprising the defending champions on Saturday.
They will be hoping to avenge their earlier defeat to the Lennon team, who got by them 3-1.
A win for the home team could see them finishing second in the group, and Carney is aiming for a top-two finish.
“Winning is contagious, and going into the second round, we want to maintain our winning record. This is a grudge match for us. Despite Lennon being out of contention for the second round, we are not taking anything for granted as we need to win to ensure that we can at least finish in the top-two position,” said Carney.
